‘Cologne Press Club International’ at the Rheingold Salon
Jens Lönneker
To mark the launch of the new “Kölner Presseclub International” series, journalist and China expert Shi Ming was a guest at the rheingold salon. In conversation with Michael Hirz, he painted a nuanced picture of the People’s Republic – one that goes beyond the usual portrayals of economic strength and geopolitical ambitions.
Shi Ming highlighted the country’s growing internal tensions: high levels of debt, structural crises and a young generation that increasingly feels there is no future for them. Phenomena such as “lying low” represent a withdrawal from a system that no longer promises social mobility for many.
At the same time, China remains a serious global power – not least due to economic overcapacity and geopolitical ambitions. The strategic challenge for Europe lies in assessing this ambivalence realistically.
Shi Ming offered words of encouragement: particularly in times of growing uncertainty, there also lies an opportunity for Europe. The prerequisite is to recognise its own strength and to act in unison as a democratic community.
